Even a mild form of depression can take your libido down. Many people have this kind of depression, but are not aware of it.
People tend to think about the symptoms of depression as not being able to get out of bed, or being suicidal, or unable to function at all. While this is true of severe depression, milder forms of depression are more subtle. If you don’t know what to look for, you may miss it.
The symptoms of a milder version of depression are:
- feeling blah, down or sad
- not enjoying things you usually enjoy
- difficulties with concentration
- having less energy than you usually do
- negative thoughts
- liking yourself less than you usually do
- feeling unmotivated
- wanting to be alone more
- crying over small things
- not feeling hopeful about the future
- loss of libido
If you have suffered through a severe form of depression, you will likely identify these symptoms as depression, but if this is new to you, you may just think that you are overly-stressed or out of sorts. Unfortunately, many in our society still view depression as a “weakness.” This can mean that they don’t get treatment. Treatment for anything – physical, emotional, or relational – is much easier when it is addressed early.
I have seen many people for low libido that are miserable and overworked in their jobs, or have lost an important friendship. or who just feel completely overwhelmed and depleted by the grind of their daily responsibilities. Grief is also very similar to depression, and a loss of a family member or pet can cause these same symptoms.
Sometimes sex therapy is about identifying that the low sex drive is about depression and treating the depression. And yes, I do both. I have treated depression for many years. I can help you with this.
